What Happened on the 19th of July?

On Friday, July 19, a software upgrade caused a global tech outage that disrupted businesses all around the world. One of the most well-known cybersecurity companies in the world, CrowdStrike, claimed that one of its patches resulted in Microsoft Windows operating systems crashing and displaying a blue screen, often referred to as the "Blue Screen of Death."

Based on Singapore, Changi Airport Group said the outage had affected more than 10 airlines. Scoot, one of the affected airlines, advised passengers departing from Changi Airport to arrive at least three hours before their flight due to the software update issued by CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company.


Why some companies have outage, while others do not have such issues regarding CrowdStrike?

Those companies that have machines running Microsoft’s Windows operating system were affected. It crashed due to a fault in the way a software update issued by CrowdStrike interacted with Windows. Virtual Machines running Windows Client and Windows Server, running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent, encounter a bug check and get stuck in a restarting state, resulting in "Blue Screen of Death".

How can this be prevented?

The problem was that a massive vendor deployed software was not properly tested. Faulty code in the update files resulted in the outage. The update's problem was "in a file that contains either configuration information or signatures. Signatures refers to code that detects unique types of malicious code or malware.

It is routine that security products update their signatures regularly as they are continuously monitoring for new malware and because they want to guarantee that their customers are safeguarded from latest threats.

The frequency of updates is probably the reason why CrowdStrike did not test it as much as possible.
